Susan and I met last spring – our horses are barn neighbors and best buddies. We talked horses and books (We exchange books. Susan averages about five a week. Really. I’m running out of favorites to give her.) I didn't know her profession until one day we were riding through an area we call "the cathedral". This is a mystical place of towering trees, bright green moss, shafts of sunlight and narrow, meandering trails that we share with deer. I was in the lead when I heard this lovely voice singing an Irish ballad. Beautiful. Otherworldly. A magic that just seemed natural in that forest. But it wasn’t really magic – it was Susan rehearsing the music she would play for a wedding that weekend.
Playing her beloved harp for people at life-changing occasions, whether joyous or sad, is Susan’s reason for being. I spent a lifetime in TV documentary and film production where amazing talent was common. Compassion, though, was difficult to find. That’s what Susan has that sets her apart. I’ve listened to her stories on our long horseback rides together and I believe she has that rare ability that can put the self aside, that allows her to be so present in the moment that she profoundly feels someone else's emotion.
Susan is a smart, funny, trusted friend. Her music is extraordinary. She is a singular artist.
